What are the traits of a GREAT agent?

I’ve been hiring new to the business agents for years and sometimes it can be difficult to accurately predict who the next “Rookie of the Year” will be. That being said, there are some character traits that great agents seem to possess.

1. Strong Communication Skills

One of the most important traits for a real estate agent is excellent communication. A great agent must listen carefully to clients’ needs, articulate information clearly, and keep all parties in the loop. Whether negotiating deals, answering questions, or explaining complex documents, effective communication helps ensure smooth transactions.

2. In-Depth Market Knowledge

A deep understanding of the local market is crucial. Top agents stay updated on current trends, property values, neighborhoods, and market fluctuations. They provide valuable insights to clients, helping them make informed decisions whether they’re buying, selling, or renting. This is something that you can learn over time, but you must have basic area knowledge to start and a willingness to dig into numbers such as average home price, inventory levels and days on market for your area.

3. Integrity and Honesty

Real estate is a trust-based business. The best agents are known for their honesty, transparency, and ethical practices. They always put the client’s best interests first and build long-lasting relationships by being straightforward, even if it means delivering hard truths.

4. Negotiation Skills

Strong negotiation skills are essential for a real estate agent to secure the best deal for their clients. Whether it’s negotiating the price, terms of the sale, or contingencies, a great agent knows how to handle negotiations tactfully and get the best possible outcome.

5. Problem-Solving Ability

Real estate transactions can be complicated, with unexpected challenges along the way. A great agent is adaptable and quick to find solutions when problems arise. From appraisal issues to last-minute changes, they are resourceful and able to navigate obstacles to ensure a smooth process.

6. Attention to Detail

In real estate, details matter—whether it’s catching small discrepancies in paperwork or ensuring every requirement is met for an inspection. Successful agents are meticulous and thorough, ensuring that all aspects of the transaction are handled correctly.

7. Patience and Persistence

Real estate transactions can take time. A great agent understands the importance of being patient with clients and staying persistent, even when things don’t progress as quickly as hoped. They follow through, make necessary adjustments, and remain committed to finding the right property or buyer.

8. Strong Networking Skills

Real estate agents with extensive networks can offer valuable connections to their clients. Whether it’s a trusted lender, home inspector, or contractor, top agents know who to call for recommendations. A strong network can also help them stay updated on off-market properties and potential buyers.

9. Tech-Savviness

In today’s digital world, great agents are tech-savvy. They use technology to streamline processes, market properties, and stay connected with clients. From using social media for advertising to employing real estate apps and CRM software for better management, tech skills are a must in today’s fast-paced market.

10. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Real estate transactions often come with emotional ups and downs. A great agent is empathetic and understands the emotional stakes involved, whether a client is selling their childhood home or purchasing their first house. They offer reassurance and support throughout the process, creating a trusting relationship.
